The collection includes a College of William and Mary bursar's account (June 1774-March 1776) with Monroe while he was a student; payroll of Capt. D. Arell's Company of 3rd Virginia Regiment (February 1777); Continental Army payroll documents (1777) mentioning Monroe; his account of the battle at Harlem Heights, N.Y., in 1776; his oath of allegiance to the U.S. (1778); a letter from Monroe to Theodosia Prevost (1778) about his future with the army; a letter of introduction for Monroe from George Washington to Archibald Cary (1779) praising his army service; and a letter from Charles Lee (1780) despairing of the success of the revolution. Also includes a 1780 list of men who were issued muskets; a 1784 land warrant for 5333-1/3 acres to James Monroe for revolutionary war service; a letter from Henry Knox (1784) requesting Monroe's assistance concerning recognition for his army service; a letter from Rawleigh Colston (1785) asking Monroe's opinions on repudiating states' notes of credit during the war; and a letter from W. Jackson (1817) concerning surviving revolutionary war soldiers. There is also a letter from Benjamin Waterhouse (1818) recalling events from the revolutionary war and recommending his son for an appointment; a letter from John Nicholas (1823) requesting information on the service of officers during the revolution; an 1830 letter concerning claims for service; and a letter from de Maussion to his mother (1778) describing Lt. Lee's poor service with Lafayette under George Washington at Valley Forge.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
